The Fallbrook Tennis Club was the host of the 22nd Annual Fallbrook Fall Junior Satellite Tournament which was played September 9-17.

A total of 125 players from throughout Southern California participated in the tournament sanctioned by the Southern California Tennis Association and thus the United States Tennis Association. The results will allow players to earn SCTA rankings.

"These are kids that are serious about tennis," said tournament director Dorothy Roth. "These are for players who want to eventually get ranked in Southern California."

Individual or doubles team tennis players, along with individual golfers, are exempt from the California Interscholastic Federation prohibition against club play during the high school season as long as the individuals are not competing on behalf of a school or club team. That allowed high school players to participate in the Girls 18, Girls 16, and Girls 14 divisions.

Temecula’s Carly DeAnda won the Girls 18 Singles after defeating Karly Hoffman of Ramona in the finals by a 6-2, 6-4 score. Rachel Shinto of Carlsbad won the Girls 16 Singles; she defeated San Diego’s Alyssa Paraiso in 6-0 and 7-5 sets for the championship. Murrieta’s Lauren Hobson captured the Girls 14 Singles with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 triumph in the finals over San Diego’s Natalia Gomez.

Kylie Haviland of Murrieta took the Girls 12 Singles division after defeating Riverside’s Nicole Jones in the finals. The first set was tied at six games apiece, triggering a best-of-13 tiebreaking game for the set. Haviland earned her seventh point in that game while Jones had only two, and Haviland went on to win the second set six games to four.

Barrier Reef Pools Girls 10 Singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the final round over Emma Arenas of Temecula.

Tanner Emerson of Bermuda Dunes won the Boys 16 Singles championship; he faced A.J. Mells of Rancho Santa Fe in the finals and prevailed in 6-0 and 6-4 sets. Matthew Scarano of San Diego won the Boys 14 Singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the finals against Temecula’s Joshua Reyes. Ryota Nakajima of San Diego captured the Boys 12 Singles title in a three-set match against Christopher Bernhardt of San Diego; Bernhardt took a 7-5 victory in the first set but Nakajima came back for 6-4 and 7-5 victories to win the match.

The Boys 16 Doubles and Boys 14 Doubles both entailed round-robin formats. The Temecula duo of Brant Bookhamer and Zach Drapala captured the Boys 16 Doubles championship while San Diego players Daniel Norwood and Timothy Ryan earned the Boys 14 Doubles title.

Fallbrook players Spencer Spagnuolo and Mallory Wedeking were the Girls 16 Doubles champions after a win over Temecula’s Katherine Adamson and Murrieta’s Laurie Minter in the finals. The first set was tied at six games apiece before the tiebreaker went into effect, and that game was tied at six points apiece before Adamson and Minter took the 13th point for the game and set. Spagnuolo and Wedeking tied the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set and took home the championship with a 6-3 win in the third and deciding set.

The Girls 12 Doubles championship went to Oceanside sisters Morgan and Megan McCray. That division’s matches were conducted in a round-robin format.
