Erica and Ty Hernandez were at a crossroads in their lives.

Erica, 31, was not happy about the direction in which her business was heading. More and more lately it seemed customers were requesting items of a more pornographic nature at what had been innocent in-home lingerie parties for the ladies.

Ty was considering opening a pool hall with the help of his birth father with whom he had been recently reunited, but he was conflicted about serving alcohol.

"I was driving in my car and asked God, ‘What do you want me to do?’" said Erica. "‘Do you want me to get another business? Do you want me to stay at home? Get a 9-to-5 job? What?’ Then a little voice in the back of my head said, ‘Christian bookstore.’"

She said she sat on the idea for four months before asking Ty what he thought of it. He told her the idea had crossed his mind a few months earlier.

"It was a God thing," she said. "It took only three months to put everything together. There was not a single hitch."

They opened the door of Risen Son Christian Books & Music on January 14 and during the past four months business has been building steadily.

The charming little store in downtown Lake Elsinore sells Bibles and inspirational books; the NOTW (Not of This World) clothing line, which is very popular with Christian youth; belt buckles; hats; purses; and Christian music of all styles, including alternative. They also sell gifts, cards and stickers. They are proud to offer the "Chosen Industry" clothing line, profits of which are used to fund huge revivals Advertisement

featuring Christian music performed by live bands, Erica said.

"We try to stay up on what is in and we want to have it in our store," she said.

The couple intends the store to be much more than a store. They want it to be a welcoming place where people can stop by for coffee and chat. On Wednesdays there is a story hour for children and live music on some weekend nights.

The two are members of Tides Church in Lake Elsinore. "It’s an awesome church," Erica said. "The words really pierce without hellfire and damnation. They exact change in you."

Because the store has a 700-square-foot basement, it now serves as a place for the youth groups from the church to meet. The couple also offers the store to any other Christian denomination to use for outreach to others.

They have one staff member, 17-year-old Samuel Cardinale, whom is loved by just about everyone, Erica said.

Erica and Ty have been "friends for 15 years" and married for ten. They have a daughter, Gabrielle, 9. Ty’s day job is at Lake Buick, Pontiac, GMAC in the body shop and parts department.

Since opening the store, they said they have met wonderful people, some who had been praying for a business like theirs to open nearby.

The store is at 133 N. Main Street in Lake Elsinore. It is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (later if there is live music). It is closed on Sunday.

"There is plenty of parking around back," Erica said.
